FAQS

What age should my child start martial arts?

4 years old is usually the perfect age to start in martial arts. At this age, children are typically ready for more structured activities throughout the day.

What type of gear does my 4-6 year old need?

From age 4-6, a jiu jitsu gi (uniform) and 12 or 14 ounce boxing gloves are all that a child needs to be fully prepared for martial arts classes. For kids over the age of 6, please see our gear page.

What type of exercises can help me improve my cardio?

Attending all scheduled classes greatly improves cardio initially. A twenty minute outside exercise like jogging, walking, and running also improves cardio and conditioning.

How soon do I put my kid into a tournament or competition?

It’s important not to push competition on a child too early. However, consistent training without a purpose or set goals can also be unproductive. In my opinion, after 2-4 months of training, you should consider exploring affordable tournament options.

What questions should I ask when choosing a gym?

Is your child stepping out of their comfort zone?

Does the instructor seem happy and knowledgeable?

Are other parents engaged and welcoming?

Is the facility clean and tidy?

What should I have at home?

A grappling dummy, some kettle bells, and a yoga mat are some great investments to help you continue your training even you aren’t at the gym.

How many times should my kids train a week?

Two times a week is perfect for a kid between the ages 4-7 years old.

For kids 8 years old and up, anywhere between 5-6 times a week is ideal. Trying other sports is incredibly beneficial because martial arts is year round and other sports are seasonal.

Should I drop off my kid for training?

As a coach, I love when the parents stay at the gym while their child trains. I notice that kids are more focused and disciplined when their parents are around to watch martial arts training.

Should I stay with my child for training?

Yes, any coach/instructor would appreciate having the parent there when training their child.

How active should I be in my child’s training during class? Should I cheer, clap, or encourage beating other kids?

Each family is different, but you should do whatever makes you feel like you’re encouraging your child.

It’s also helpful to communicate with your child’s instructor about what’s appropriate and comfortable at each gym.

When should my child know how to tie a belt?

The belt is the item that not only demonstrates their rank, it’s also what holds their gi (uniform) together.

As a family, it’s helpful to learn how to tie it yourselves.

Once a competitor earns a gray belt, I as the coach expect them to know how to tie a gi.

Where should I order martial arts gear for myself or my child?

The gym/instructor usually has the better quality gear at a higher price point.

Outside of the gym, you may find better deals but the gear itself won’t be as durable.

Where did you find the motivation to teach and coach martial arts for kids?

Coaching is my passion. The entire reason I started training martial arts was to build others in the sport and bring out the best in others. That’s what continues to push me everyday in coaching.
